Cortical Sunburst by Greg Dunn
Neuroscientist and artist Greg Dunn explores the brain in his paintings of the hippocampus, cortex, and neurons. He works through the mediums of gold, dye, enamel and latex on various metal plates, unifying his twin passions for art and neuroscience. His technique is influenced by the minimalist style of Japanese scroll and screen paintings fron the Edo period and the neuronal forms are painted in the Asian sumi-e style.
Dunn is a self-taught artist and received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011. The department of Neuroscience at UCSD commissioned a series of his works, featuring the hippocampus, retina, cortex and Purkinje neurons.
